Twenty-five years ago today, the 20th of December, the Philippine ferry Doña Paz sank after colliding with the oil tanker Vector. At least 4,341 persons died as a result, but who cares to remember? Filipinos have rather short memories. No memorial erected for the victims. And certainly no film made about the tragedy that killed almost thrice as many as the sinking of the Titanic. Even so, the Doña Paz is part of the maritime legacy of a world that continues to grapple with sea accidents. Though many don’t see, it juts out from the horizon like a ghost in mankind’s spiritual seascape. ~Barista Uno

And the Philippines still refuses to have an IMO compliant casualty investigation capability.
History is story for the PH maritime industry. For some reasons or another and sometimes unimaginable why and how but publicity still persist and if ever we have an Oscar or Grammy award we are the best and most decorated actors in maritime history. Lately the USS Guardian, we had talking and discussing how to removed from the reef and the more we talk on TV and newspapers the more the destruction will occur. I will not surprised in a week or two the USS Guardian had been dismantled by unknown forces. The money spent though its not come from the government coffers but the damage will be beyond our imagination and it should be more than what we expect. So many resources had been neglected and wasted and why we wasted so much time by asking an advice from some in our own maritime sector re: Malayan Towage and Salvage and some sailors waiting to be tapped who had the experience with this kind of special operation. Most of the crew I know from the smit barge are mostly Filipinos and most of their salvage fleet are manned by filipino masters and officers. As a manning capital of the world we had all the capabilities but sad to know and say publicity stunt still persist first.
